Steve and Claire Love may have only opened this restaurant in late 2009, but Steve’s wealth of experience (he was a Roux Scholar in 1997) mean he’s already well known in Birmingham. The restaurant is only newly developed Canal Square where it overlooks gaggles of geese. The restaurant has a pared-back feel, with dark wood tables and chocolate brown carpet and banquettes.

Steve’s classic  training shines through in his contemporary cooking style, with Michelin-level presentation in dishes such as slow-cooked breast and braised leg of pigeon with pink almonds, cherries and 85% abinao chocolate, or braised shoulder, confit belly and crispy tongue of Cotswold Lamb with aubergine caviar, radish, peas, anchovy, green tea and mint. Local ingredients are used as much as possible with cheese selected by Paxton and Whitfield in Stratford-upon-Avon.  Claire Love’s excellent wine list starts at £18, and has a nicely varied by-the-glass selection, £4.25-£8.

Best Table The chef’s table seats four -  you have your own space but can still see the action in the kitchen.
